I’ve been asking the Lord a lot of questions about the meaning of love the last four or five years. Recently, I realized that when many Christians speak of the love of God they often speak of it in the past tense. They express awe over Christ’s willingness to love us by dying on the cross or acknowledge it when considering his decision to give up heaven to come to earth as a baby. While those thoughts are worthy of awe and are absolutely true, something about that has been getting my attention and I realize now it’s because my perspective is changing. God’s love today is equally amazing and available as it was on those days. The same Lord who loved me, who loved us that way on those days is doing the same today. He will also amazingly love tomorrow.
While reading the words above, you might have thought I was stating the obvious. But that is part of what I’m trying to say. It should have been obvious to me. It wasn’t. Once again, I’m shocked. Why wasn’t that obvious to me before? Why don’t we realize how loved we are? How will my life be different if I really embrace this every single day of the rest of my life? I know that I wasn’t getting it before because there has been a significant change. I am experiencing more hope, more consistently than ever before. I know that my doubts about God’s current love have been responsible for moments when I experienced some level of hopelessness. Also, I have experienced great joy in the midst of circumstances that previously caused great concern, but now find I literally feel shielded by the acknowledgement of God’s love. Love casts out fear and wards off doubts. And I feel more secure than I have ever felt before in the midst of the same circumstances.
Questions for Reflection:
"But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread your protection over them, that all who love your name may be filled with joy. For you bless the godly, O Lord; you surround them with your shield of love. Psalm 5:11-12
Dear Lord, you are a God of love. You are the definition of love. May we come to understand what that means as we remember and celebrate the coming of the Savior to the world! May we recognize your active love for us this day. May that love inspire us to live lives of trust, joy and hope. Thank you that your love is unfailing and never gives up on persuading us to believe the truth about You. Amen
